The 1904 atlas

Who paid for the atlas

Four pages at the back of the book list the people who subscribed to it, town by town, with a “Non-Residents” section at the end. A good many of them are the names on the plates, and here they come with their house names attached.

A county atlas in 1904 was paid for in advance by the people it flattered. The subscribers got their names in the back, some of them with an advertisement, and the result is an accidental who’s-who of the county in the year the plates were drawn.

I. What it looks like

The entries are a name in small capitals, then whatever the subscriber paid to have said about them. Some are one line. Some are a business card:

COOK, HENRY H.—Wheatleigh.
FOSTER, GIRAUD.—Bellefontaine.
JESUP, M. K.—Belvoir Terrace.
LANIER, CHAS.—Allen Winden.
GOODMAN, RICHARD.—Yokun.
GILMORE, CLINTON G.—Lithgow.
HAVEN, GEO. G.—Sunnycroft.
JAQUES, Dr. H. P.—Home Farm.

That is eight of the plates’ parcel names, confirmed from a second place in the same book, in the owners’ own words. Two of them are new to this site: GREENLEAF, R. C.—Windyside and FOLSOM, GEO. W.—Sunnyside.

II. The trades bought space too

The subscriber list is not only cottagers, which is what makes it useful for The Work. Under Lee:

WILD BROTHERS, Proprietors. Berkshire Bluestone Quarries. Stone cut and fitted to plans.
SMITH PAPER COMPANY. Paper Manufacturers. Valley Hill, Niagara Mill, Columbia Mill, Eagle Mill.

Under Lenox, JAMES CLIFFORD’S SONS — General Contractors, also dealers in Furniture, Hardware, Paints, Crockery, Wall Papers, Lumber, Builders Supplies — who also hold two parcels on plate 22 and one on plate 23, and CLARKE BROTHERS, Wholesale dealers in Hay, Grain and Feed of all kinds, Lenoxdale. A quarry that cuts stone to plans and a contractor that sells the lumber and the paint are the two ends of the stone story and the timber story, advertising themselves in 1904.

III. The text

Machine-read from the four pages and set out below as it came, which is to say imperfectly: the columns are narrow, the type is small, and an OCR reading of 1904 small capitals will mistake a name now and then. It is here so the names can be searched at all. The scans themselves are pages 64 to 67 of the book, and any line below can be checked against them.

Patrons’ Directory of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, printed as the last four pages of Atlas of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, Barnes & Farnham, 1904. Boston Public Library copy, via Digital Commonwealth. No known copyright restrictions. and reproduced in full here. The text below the search box is machine-read from those scans and is imperfect; it is offered as a finding aid, not as a transcription, and every line can be checked against the page it links to. The entries quoted in the story above were read by eye from the scans. Nothing here is corrected or normalized: the book’s spellings, abbreviations and its habit of running a name and a house together with an em dash are left as printed.
